New Zealand goalkeeper Alex Paulsen joins Motherwell on loan
New Zealand goalkeeper Alex Paulsen has joined Scottish Premiership side Motherwell on a season-long loan from Premier League club Bournemouth. The 24-year-old keeper, who was part of the All Whites' 2026 World Cup squad but didn't feature, moves to Fir Park after two years with the Cherries.
Paulsen's last competitive outing came in New Zealand's 1-5 defeat to Belgium on June 27, 2026, as the All Whites ended their World Cup campaign with a fifth consecutive loss. The team has struggled recently, going winless in their last five matches (LLDDL) and losing their last two games.
What has Paulsen achieved in his career?
Paulsen caught Bournemouth's attention after a standout spell with Wellington Phoenix in A-League. The £2m signing has yet to make a competitive appearance for the Premier League side, spending the past two seasons on loan - first at Auckland and then at Polish side Lechia Gdansk, where he made 24 appearances in the Ekstraklasa.
Why Motherwell needed a new goalkeeper
Motherwell manager Alfred Johansson sees Paulsen as a perfect replacement for Calum Ward, who left for Queens Park Rangers. "Alex had a hugely successful spell in Australia and New Zealand," Johansson said. "He was part of teams that liked to play a certain style of football, and they achieved their targets."
Paulsen arrives at Fir Park with high hopes. "I've got a great feeling coming in here," he said. "I've spoken to Elijah Just about the club, and everything he has said has got me excited about what's to come."
New Zealand's next challenge
The All Whites will look to bounce back from their World Cup disappointment when they host India on November 12, 2026. With Paulsen gaining valuable experience in Scotland, New Zealand fans will hope he can return stronger for future international duties.
