Launch of Hydrogen-Powered Cars at Palmerston North Airport
Ezi Car Rental has added three Toyota Mirai hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) to its fleet at Palmerston North Airport. The move marks the first time a hydrogen-powered car can be rented through a New Zealand company.
Availability and Pricing
The Mirai vehicles became available on 17 August exclusively to eligible corporate customers. Rentals are limited to one or two days. An introductory rate of $79 per day is offered to eligible Ezi Business customers who book before 30 September 2026. The rate includes Ezi Ultra insurance with zero excess, the Premium Location Fee and hydrogen.
Refuelling Infrastructure
The fleet is supported by Hiringa Energy’s hydrogen refuelling station located near Palmerston North Airport. Customers can collect a Mirai with enough hydrogen for approximately 250 km of driving and return it without needing to refuel.
Background
Toyota Mirai vehicles have been on New Zealand roads since 2022 as part of Toyota NZ’s hydrogen trials. The new fleet provides the first rental opportunity for customers to experience a hydrogen-powered car.
Corporate Focus
Ezi Car Rental’s decision to launch the Mirai fleet aligns with the company’s strategy to offer sustainable vehicle options to corporate clients. The partnership with Hiringa Energy ensures that the necessary refuelling infrastructure is in place to support the hydrogen vehicles.
Future Outlook
While the Mirai fleet is currently limited to a small number of vehicles and a short rental window, the introduction of hydrogen-powered cars in the New Zealand rental market could pave the way for broader adoption of fuel-cell technology in the region.
